Carnival Cruise Line has introduced Carnival Rewards™, and if you’ve been trying to figure out the difference between stars and points, you’re not alone.
Carnival’s loyalty program now runs on two separate systems:
- Carnival Rewards Points
- Status Qualifying Stars
They are earned together, but they do completely different things.
Here’s how it actually works.

Introducing Carnival’s New Loyalty Program
Carnival Cruise Line’s new loyalty program marks a structural shift in how guests earn rewards and achieve status.
The Carnival Rewards™ launch on June 2026 marks the transition to Carnival Rewards’ launch on June, with full rollout in September 2026. This new program will be closely tied to cruise fares and onboard purchases, allowing guests to accumulate both Carnival Rewards Points and qualifying stars that will determine their status level.
Under the new Carnival Rewards program, eligible Carnival purchases now impact both redemption and recognition. Carnival Rewards will offer more opportunities to earn rewards and achieve higher status levels based on spending on the Carnival cruise line.
For current VIFP Club members, status in the current VIFP structure remains honored during the transition. Carnival loyalty members will receive emails explaining how current loyalty status is honored and how stars continue earning VIFP status as usual until the new program launches fully.
This update serves as a new entry into Carnival’s broader travel loyalty strategy within the cruise industry.
What Is Carnival Rewards™?
Carnival Rewards™ is Carnival’s new spending-based rewards program.
Under the new structure, guests earn:
- 3 points per $1 spent on eligible Carnival purchases
- 3 stars per $1 spent on eligible Carnival purchases
- 1 point per $1 in casino points earned
Eligible purchases include cruise fare and onboard spending.
Points are added to your Carnival Rewards account and can be redeemed.
Stars determine your loyalty status.
Same spending. Two different outcomes.
What Are Carnival Rewards Points?
Points are your redemption currency.
You earn points when you:
- Pay your cruise fare
- Make onboard purchases
- Earn casino points
- Use the Carnival Rewards Mastercard
Points can be redeemed for:
- Specialty dining
- Spa treatments
- Shore excursions
- Drinks
- WiFi
- Cruise deposits
- Even cruise fare
Points are flexible.
They are meant to be used.
They do not determine your loyalty tier.
Ways to Earn Points (It’s Pretty Straightforward)
Carnival made this simple.
You earn when you book.
You earn when you cruise.
You earn when you game.
You earn when you use the Carnival® World Mastercard®.
If you’re spending with Carnival, you’re earning points.
Ways to Redeem Points
You can redeem points:
- During booking (toward deposits or cruise fare)
- Before you sail (excursions, dining, spa, drink packages, WiFi)
- While onboard (drinks, shopping, gaming, activities)
Points are built to offset real cruise costs.
What Are Status Qualifying Stars?
Stars determine your status level.
They are not redeemable.
Guests earn:
- 3 stars per $1 spent on eligible Carnival purchases
That means cruise fare and onboard spending now directly impact your status progression.
Stars track movement through tiers such as:
- Blue (yes, the Blue card is officially sailing into the sunset — I wrote a full emotional goodbye to it right here)
- Red
- Gold
- Platinum
- Diamond
Stars determine recognition.
Points determine redemption value.
Stars vs. Points: The Clear Breakdown
| Feature | Points | Stars |
|---|---|---|
| Earn Rate | 3 per $1 | 3 per $1 |
| Casino Earn | 1 per casino point | N/A |
| What They Do | Redeem for Carnival purchases | Determine status tier |
| Redeemable | Yes | No |
| Affect Platinum/Diamond? | No | Yes |
Points help you pay for things.
Stars move you up the ladder.
Two systems. Two purposes.
How Does the Carnival Rewards Mastercard Fit In?
The Carnival Rewards Mastercard, issued by Barclays, continues under the updated structure.
Fun Points previously earned will convert to Carnival Rewards Points during the June 2026 conversion.
Using the card earns you points.
Status progression comes from stars earned on eligible Carnival purchases. For rewards members who use the card regularly, this creates another layer within Carnival’s broader travel loyalty strategy.
What Happens During the June 2026 Conversion?
Carnival has confirmed a June 2026 conversion.
During this phase:
- Fun Points convert to Carnival Rewards Points
- Accounts transition into updated tracking
- Loyalty members receive communication outlining changes
This aligns accounts ahead of the full rollout.
What Happens in September 2026?
September 2026 marks the official rollout of Carnival Rewards™.
At that time:
- Updated point tracking becomes fully active
- Redemption functionality is fully available
- Accounts reflect the updated loyalty framework
Carnival has indicated that the program’s rollout will occur in stages.
Use the Carnival Rewards Calculator
If you want to see how spending translates into both stars and points, Carnival has released an official calculator.

You can plug in cruise fare, onboard spending, casino play, and Mastercard use to estimate what you might earn.
It’s the easiest way to visualize how this new structure works.
What This Means for Carnival Cruisers
Here’s the real shift.
Under the old VIFP system, your status was mostly about how many days you sailed.
Now, spending matters.
When you book your cruise and spend onboard, you’re earning:
- Points (that you can use)
- Stars (that move your status)
If you cruise once a year but book higher categories and enjoy specialty dining, this structure may work in your favor.
If you cruise frequently but keep spending light, your progression may look different than it did before.
Carnival didn’t eliminate loyalty recognition.
They tied it directly to spending.
Once you separate stars from points in your mind, the program becomes much easier to understand.
How This Compares to the Old VIFP Club
Under the previous VIFP Club structure, status was primarily based on cruise days. The more days you sailed with Carnival Cruise Line, the higher your loyalty tier.
The new Carnival loyalty program shifts that dynamic. Instead of counting only sailing days, the program now ties progression to eligible Carnival purchases. That means cruise fare and onboard spending directly impact how you earn status.
For many frequent cruisers, the previous VIFP Club structure felt simple. You sailed, you accumulated days, and you moved up a loyalty tier. The new Carnival loyalty program shifts that framework by tying status progression more directly to spending within the rewards program.
The loyalty benefits still exist. The path to earning them is what has evolved.
