R Class (1989)

Renaissance Cruises was a cruise line that operated from 1989 until it stopped in 2001. It had eight R-class ships known for their luxury and design, making the company famous for its fancy and intimate cruising experiences.

1998-2001: R-class ships entered service for Renaissance Cruises, introducing a new era of luxury cruising.

2001: Renaissance Cruises ceases operations, affecting the future of the R-class ships.

Post-2001: R-class ships are sold or chartered to various cruise lines, finding new life across the globe.

2003 and Beyond: The ships, now under different ownerships, continue to operate, each carrying a piece of Renaissance Cruises’ legacy into their new journeys.

PCL added two old Renaissance ships to their fleet in 2002. These ships were used for longer and more exotic cruises. The ships were Tahitian Princess, first based in Tahiti and later renamed Ocean Princess and Pacific Princess.

The Pacific Princess was the main attraction in the popular TV series “The Love Boat,” which aired from 1977 to 1986. It played a significant role in making the cruise industry popular. The old Pacific Princess was relatively small compared to modern cruise ships, with a passenger capacity of just 600, which made it seem almost like a yacht.

Though the original “Love Boat” is no longer in service, Princess Cruises keeps the show’s spirit alive. They host themed cruises to pay homage to their “Love Boat” legacy. For example, they have organized a themed cruise aboard the Enchanted Princess with various “Love Boat”-themed activities, cast members’ appearances, and much more. The themed cruise allows fans to reconnect with the charm and romance of the original show while enjoying the modern amenities of a Princess cruise ship.

If you’re a fan of the series or cruising, these themed experiences offer a delightful blend of nostalgia and contemporary luxury cruising.

Sun Class (1995)

The Sun Class started in 1995 with the Sun Princess, one of the biggest cruise ships of its time. It was all about giving passengers a comfy and warm experience. They wanted passengers to feel at home, and they did this by providing personal service and sticking to classic cruise traditions. This made it easy for passengers to make new friends, and people often stayed in touch even after their trip ended. The Sun Class is like a cozy blanket that welcomes you every time. Other ships in the Sun Class include the Dawn Princess and the Sea Princess, which provided intimate cruising experiences until 2020. The Pacific Explorer, on the other hand, was transferred to P&O Australia to continue the Sun Class legacy.

  • Dawn Princess (1997)
  • Sea Princess (1998)

Grand Class (1998)

The Grand Class ships are the seasoned aristocrats of the Princess fleet. They offer an intimate experience without sacrificing elegance or fun. The Grand Princess and the Emerald Princess are two of these ships, and they come with a bustling Piazza that features cafes, shops, and spontaneous entertainment. The Grand Class is like your charming, well-traveled aunt who always has the best stories and knows exactly where the coziest nook for a chat is.

The Grand Princess was the first of the Grand Class ships, ushering in a new era of larger ships for the fleet in 1998. The Golden Princess (2001) and Pacific Adventure (2020) were renamed and transferred to P&O Australia, but they offer grand experiences. The Star Princess (2002) and Pacific Encounter (2021) were renamed and moved to P&O Australia but retained the Grand Class charm. The Diamond Princess (2004) offers unique itineraries, including around Japan and Southeast Asia, while the Sapphire Princess (2004) is similar to the Diamond Princess, but it’s designed to offer a variety of destinations and experiences. The Caribbean Princess (2004) was the first ship to introduce the “Movies Under the Stars” concept, while the Crown Princess (2006), Emerald Princess (2007), and Ruby Princess (2008) expanded the Grand Class offerings with more amenities and refined experiences.

Coral Class (2002)

The Coral Class ships, like the Coral Princess and Island Princess, are the adventurers of the Princess family. They’re a bit smaller than the others, which makes them perfect for exploring the more exotic and less accessible destinations. Imagine cruising through the Panama Canal or checking out the icy wonders of Alaska on a ship that feels like a close-knit community. The Coral Class offers a unique blend of comfort and discovery, so you can have the best of both worlds. The Coral Princess (2002) is specifically designed for navigating the Panama Canal, which means you can enjoy some unique itineraries. And if you’re interested in exploring other unique destinations like the Panama Canal, the Island Princess (2003) is the perfect choice. It’s a sister ship to the Coral Princess, with the same design and features optimized for those kinds of adventures.

Royal Class (2013)

Picture this – you step into this massive palace floating on the ocean and feel like a king/queen. That’s what it feels like to be on a Royal Class ship! The Regal Princess and the Sky Princess are two of the most famous Royal Class ships known for their luxurious design, innovative amenities, and a wide variety of dining options. You can watch a movie under the stars or get a massage at the Lotus Spa and feel like royalty. The Royal Class started with the Royal Princess in 2013, setting a new standard for luxury and amenities. The Regal Princess soon followed and offered similar upscale features and innovative design. The Majestic Princess was tailored for the Chinese market, and the Sky Princess, introduced in 2019, came with new features and enhancements. The Enchanted Princess is the latest addition to the Royal Class, and it’s designed to offer cutting-edge amenities.

Planning and Booking Tips

When planning a Princess Cruises vacation, timing, and strategy are important to get the best deals, choose the perfect itinerary, and ship to fit your needs. Here are some expert tips to help you plan your cruise:

Booking Timeline: If you’re going to faraway or remote destinations like the South Pacific or Antarctica or need international flights, booking at least six months ahead can get you a better deal. Last-minute deals can be pretty sweet for shorter trips like West Coast getaways.

Seasonal Promotions: Look for promotions like onboard credit, reduced fares, or other Princess Cruises offers. Signing up for their newsletters is a good way to stay in the know.

Booking Onboard: If you’re already on a cruise and thinking about your next one, consider the Future Cruise Deposits Program. It lets you make a fully refundable deposit on board to secure onboard spending money for a future cruise. Plus, you can choose your specific cruise later, within the next two years.

Utilize a Travel Advisor: Booking with a trusted travel advisor can get you access to exclusive group rates, onboard credits, and other perks. They can also help you navigate promotions to find the best deals and provide valuable assistance if you run into any issues.

MedallionClass Experience: Download the MedallionClass app as soon as you book. The app helps personalize and streamline your cruise experience, from making dining reservations to getting around the ship. You can also customize your wearable Medallion device through the app to make it even cooler.

Understand Fare Structures: Princess Cruises’ fare structures, like Princess Plus and Princess Premier, come with extras like beverage packages, Wi-Fi, and dining options. Take a look at these packages to see if they align with your vacation preferences and could save you some cash compared to buying these options separately.

Early vs. Last-Minute Booking: Booking early gives you the best selection of cabins and dining options, but last-minute bookings can sometimes save you a bundle. Check out the “Drop & Go” last-minute deals on Princess Cruises’ website for spontaneous getaways.

By following these tips and planning ahead, you can have a fantastic cruise experience while keeping your budget in check. Whether you’re looking for adventure in Alaska, relaxation in the Caribbean, or breathtaking European views, Princess Cruises has got you covered.

Packing and Preparation Guide

When you’re getting ready for your Princess Cruise, ensuring you have everything you need to get on the ship and all the different activities you’ll be doing onboard, including formal nights, is important. Here are some things you should keep in mind to make sure you’re all set for your trip:

Essential Travel Documents

Pack all the important travel documents you need in your carry-on bag, such as your passport, visa, cruise tickets, and travel insurance information. It’s also a good idea to keep copies of these documents in a different spot for safekeeping.

Formal Night Attire

The number of formal nights you’ll have depends on the length of your cruise. If it’s between 5 and 9 days, there will be two formal nights. You can check the schedule once you’re onboard using the Cruise Personalizer or the ‘Daily Patter.’

For the guys, it’s a good idea to pack a dark suit or dinner jacket with slacks, while ladies might want to bring an evening gown or elegant cocktail dress. Remember to pack the right shoes and accessories, too!

Some formal nights have a theme, like ‘Black and White Ball’ or ‘Captain’s Gala,’ so make sure you pack the right colors and accessories.

Casual and Smart Casual Attire

You can wear casual clothes during the day, just make sure they’re comfortable. Bring some layers like sweaters or light jackets if you’re going to a cooler place or going on an excursion.

For dinner on non-formal nights, ladies can wear sundresses, skirts, or pants with a nice top, while guys can wear pants with a collared shirt.

Other Essentials

Remember swimwear, sun protection (hats, sunglasses, sunscreen), and workout clothes if you plan to exercise or visit the pool.

Pack things like hanging toiletry bags, packing cubes, or over-the-door organizers to keep your cabin organized.

Download the MedallionClass app to make things easier onboard, like opening your room or making purchases.

Pro Tips

Rolling clothes can help prevent wrinkles, as irons are not typically available in cruise cabins.

Booking spa or salon appointments in advance for formal nights will save time and make sure you get an appointment.

Pick clothes that can be mixed and matched to make the most of your luggage space.

Remember, being prepared is important, but don’t go overboard with packing. Adjust your list based on the length of your cruise and the places you’ll be visiting so you’re comfortable and meet the dress codes onboard.

With Princess’ amazing ships, beautiful destinations, and unbeatable service, you get more than just a regular vacation – you get a luxurious voyage into a world of exploration and elegance. Whether you’re chilling on the sun deck or eating under the stars, every moment on a Princess Cruise is designed to be fun and inspiring.
